April 2022 Dividend Income

I received $123.52 in taxable dividend income for April 2022. I have two pieces of good news this month:

  1. $123.52 is my best income so far for my weakest month of the quarter
  2. I broke a personal record on contributions for a single month!

Another tax season is in the books. My taxes shook out in my favor, and I had a bit more left over than expected. I also leveled off my emergency fund to a number I’m happy with, so was able to contribute quite a bit more than usual this month.

My purchases are detailed below, but I’m really finding it easier to just keep adding to VTI. I really followed that strategy this month, and it removed a lot of anguish over finding the “right” purchase to make.

RSG was my biggest improver year-over-year, mostly thanks to additional purchases last May.

ticker total_payout_2022 total_payout_2021
RSG $22.08 $13.60
MDT $20.16 $15.08
MO $18.90 $18.06
KO $13.64 $13.02
KMB $9.28 $9.12
CINF $8.97 $8.19
IFF $8.69 $8.47
CSCO $7.60 $7.40
CAH $7.36 $7.29
EMN $6.84 $6.21
$123.52 $106.44

Dividend Growth

percent_increase annual_increase_dollars
CINF 9.52% $3.12
CSCO 2.70% $0.80
KMB 1.75% $0.64
KO 4.76% $2.48
Total $7.04

The first month of each quarter is not my strongest, including in the dividend raise department. I am pleased with CINF’s 9+% raise and even Coke’s nearly 5% raise, but CSCO and KMB were fairly disappointing, especially given the inflation going on today. I’d like my dividend raises to offset inflation (at least in the long run), but I suppose I should be thankful any time a holding gives me a raise. It’s better than keeping the money in a savings account.

I would have to invest $446 at my current portfolio yield of 1.58% to produce this much income.

April’s income from new contributions seems like a mistake at first, but it’s real. I added contributions like crazy. I mentioned above, but it was a combination of settling taxes, recently topping off my emergency fund, and also watching prices come down a bit.

My strategy is to add to my holdings whenever I have the money. I don’t try to time the market. I also am finding VTI an easier and easier holding to add to since it takes away my bias. I have noticed my holdings don’t typically outperform the market despite my best effort the past few years.

I have found individual holdings to be a bit more fun in the past, but I’ve enjoyed spending less time looking into investments recently. I hardly look at the price or past performance of VTI, and don’t have to worry too much about payout ratios or yields. I am just going with the hive mind. This month more than ever, I just added shares of VTI whenever I had something to contribute.

Purchases – BLK, HD, IFF, MCD, NVDA, UNH, VTI

2.0 shares of BlackRock (BLK) @ $739.05/share. Cost Basis: $1,478.10. Forward Income: $39.04/year

BLK’s price keeps coming down, and I was glad to add more!

1.0 share of Home Depot (HD) @ $296.80/share. Cost Basis: $296.80. Forward Income: $7.60/year

HD’s price keeps coming down, and I was glad to add more! This seems repetitive along with BLK, but it was a theme this month. Both HD and BLK are great companies and I hope to hold each for a while.

2.0 shares of McDonald’s (MCD) @ $248.57/share. Cost Basis: $497.14. Forward Income: $11.04/year

I’ve been meaning to add a bit to MCD. I love the brand domination.

10.0 shares of NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) @ $246.75/share. Cost Basis: $2,467.52. Forward Income: $1.60/year

This may satisfy my NVDA itch I’ve had the last few months. Thankfully the price was a bit more agreeable than some of my other NVDA purchases, but I’ve had the privilege of watching it drop much further. Maybe that will make me want to add more in the next few months.

2.0 shares of UnitedHealth Group (UNH) @ $534.59/share. Cost Basis: $1,069.17. Forward Income: $11.60/year

UNH has been one of my best performers. This is a case of “watering the growers, not the weeds.”

79.0 shares of Vanguard Total Stock Market Index (VTI) @ $222.17/share. Cost Basis: $17,551.23. Forward Income: $234.39/year

This is where most of my attention went this month. With the larger purchases, I liked picking VTI as a life-long holding that will be readjusted for me automatically as time goes on. Can’t wait to see the June payout!
